Hi,In some degree,I agree with your conclusion as you mentioned in the end.About the "objective knowledge",it is always relative with subjective knowledge. It seems impossible to probe the authentic truth in our times. As I want to say, probably, the truth we pursue does not exist ever, because we always live in our own mind. is the mind really immense enough to figure it out? Or maybe I could see the truth as the synthesis of all the infinite dimensions, which are the kind of relations between the mirrorings of the world from all objects and the world itself.

Hi,I think I have the same feeling with that you mentioned in the end.we also discussed that one “perception without conception is blind” Professor assumed a baby in a certain space where is no skills training, education, and language...... So he will perceive nothing and become a very different creature from us. I don't know exactly whether he could perceive somthing or not.I wonder whether this kind of ability to perceive is the "a prior". Thanks for sharing.

Hi,Tha you used "analytic judgement" and "synthetic judgment" to explain gives me a another way for me to understand what we could define it a priori or a posteriori. It seems that the two terms have a kind of causal relationship. It questions myself that there is the first of a priori in the beginning of our lifes?

Hi Elin,
I think you give me a good method to do the course. Before the seminar,I really feel difficult to finish a blog just through some philosophical terms without any discussions, even I checked in the wikipedia and another sources.
I think the seminar is really critical part. There is probably no absolute truth. We just said our own opinions and assumed some situations and tried to answer questions each other.Anyway, thanks for sharing.

Hi
I think I almost get the same with you in the 1st theme. From the cognition of humans,I remind one sentence is "Our world is always our world " We can't see the truth objectively. We just see the tip of iceberg. even we could not say some principle we get from the outside changes is truth. It's very practical to use in the academic research to make the work more critical and dialectical. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Nino,
I think you did a good job in 1st theme. In total,I think probably there are two key clues through the notional interpretations in pratical aspects. One is how we know the world and perceive it.The other is what kind of thing it is to see the world objectively. From your reflections,I am even clearer from the structural side.BTW I'm JUN :) Thanks for sharing.

Hi,about the apriori knowledge, professor assumed if we came to a room which exactly had 20 people.however,we can not clear how many people there without counting or other preparation. In some degree,it convinced the existence of a posteriori knowledge.I think there is the cause relationship between the apriori and posteriori knowledge.

Hi,I have the same opinions with you in a priori knowledge that we never clarify the truth in an objective way.In the end you mentioned that knowledge depending on experience. It seems convincing to interpret the existance of posteriori knowledge. However,if we cannot response to the external changes objectively, how could we utilize our experience to conduct the knowledge hierarchay which is authetic truth. It still questions me in some ways. Thanks for sharing.

The case about the radio transmission you mentioned is very vivid for words from Kant.Do you think it might be the potential cause relationship between the encrypted and decoding process ,or you could see them as a package. They would exist relying on each other. As a priori knowledge,it just exists without any past experiences. It questions on the form of existance of the conceptions. I think it would be right to understand as a posteriori knowledge . Thanks for sharing anyway.

Hi,your reflection gives me a clear and understandable brief about what is apriori and posteriori form.Like you said we perceive the world in the framework of several categories that is a priori .and use these as the foundation to perceive the external changes. In Kant's theory, these changes just make us mess up.We observe objects subjectively in some degree. So the apriori and posteriori should constitude the knowledge. It might be some rules or belief we should follow. Thanks for sharing.

Hej,I think you really did a good job.For the conception of "aura",it interests me a lot.You mentioned that the "aura" is situationally determined for the natural objects.Does this mean that we just utilize the objects in certain conditions meanwhile give them different meanings to prove their senses of existance? In my group, like we concluded,it should be the "soul" of objects to communicate with us.Thanks for sharing.

I think your discussion about the mass media used to propagate politics is very brillant. It seems contradictory with the universal and objective value that media should have, however,it is reasonable that people use media for publicity and communication. As you said,we live in a information network. In some degree, every individual could be seen as a new media to process the information. We can absorb what we want and block what we refuse, then exchange with others.

Hi,I totally agree with your opinion about our perception which is naturally and historically determined. And I think it reveals some situations in our daily life that are completely uncertain for us to face up.Like someone says “every thing doesn't change, but we have changed ”In the long term, our perception is running on the process.I think it is kind of protection system to make us fit the world better. Thanks for sharing

Hi,
I think "aura" is a term to replace the "soul" of the art objects.Like a human's heart, the art objects also have their central station for their own to control themselves and give them life, emotion and language. When you stand in the front of an art object, there should have a communication. You could have the feeling to understand it which is set by the artist, otherwise, you will feel nothing Because you only perceive it,it does not give a response. Thanks for sharing

Hi,
I think you consider the nominalism and realism in another way.Initially,I just thought the nominalism is about the things that we never need to be aware of or obtain. It already exist because our common knowledge live with it and rely on it.For the “Realism”,it should be connected with the rational thoughts and focused on the common perception instead of the perception for the external changes.Anyway, your reflection is very interesting to me,and give me new view to make sense. Thanks for sharing

Hi,
I also get interested in the power that facilitate the revolutionary of culture. In my group,we discussed the mass culture which have the potential factors to promote or not.Because in my way,I treated it as the products to service people. But it do has the leadership to the public in a certain period or even a long term as the kind of enligntenment to the public. In some degree,it could change people's life. Thanks for sharing.

Hi,I agree with your opinion for the "aura" you claim. To some extents, we always are influenced by mass medias .It can not be avoided to addict in the circle that was made by the reproduction or synthesized stuff. We could filter these before we accept them for building the more authentic culture. But we must admit that it should be the generation of the public requirement. It actually become the product for public consumption. Thanks for sharing.

Hi,Good reflection you did.I think your instances inspire me to understand the nominalism in some way.I just confused about the nominalism and realism before the seminar. As you said.we define every leaf of a tree instead of giving the different meaning to every leaf.Probably,it just the way for us to categorize the objects we encounter as the realists. To some extents,I don't think it is necessory to figure them out, even the nominalism might live with every individual. Hi,I have the same ideas with you about the natural and historical perceptions. In some way,it might reveal the truth why we always change our mind to the same thing. It gonna be like determining the results we perceive without any preconditions. The time and space you mentioned are completely natural perceptions.Your instance in the end is very interesting.Probably the wheel just exists before we get the wheel we have today. But I think they are the different stuff. For the first one, it should be the natural one concerned with the time and space. The second one, which is definitely invented by us,become the way to shape our perceptions in different historical context. Thanks for sharing

I actually do agree with your perspective about the explanation of "theory" which is casual relationship between the phenomenon and the nature behind the information you get.The famous words say "see through the appearance to the essence".We see it by our organ units, then,we want to know what happen in our surroundings. So we try to explore the wolrd with the assumptions and questionaires to support the theoretical systems. However,I think all the things should be based on the preconditions which is just like the instructor's talk at the beginning of the lecture "theory concerns with perceiving".That is why you get the bird flying backwards. Nice review. Thanks for sharing.

Hi
Your opinion about the role of theory to guide our knowledge is quiet interesting.Yes,theory should have the objective description and judgement to reflect and generalize the information that we perceive and observe from the external changes in some way.It is given the value because we need it as a tool to find and
interpret more phenomenons. However,It's always in the process to develop and makes our conclusions end up with the knowledge. In the vein, we complete and detailing our knowledge system constantly and yet these still are progressive. Thanks for sharing

Hi,
Actually,I still do not catch your ideas about the comparision between the scientific and philosophical theory.I do not think your discription about the empirical data used in the theory are very authentic,Because these data should be collected from the previous research based on the old theories in some way.The empirical data do not exist naturally.Like the professor said, the theory concerns with perceiving and observing to find the information from specific phenomena. In total, the theory and researchshould constitude a inner circle to develop by themselves. Thanks for sharing.

Hi,
I am also impressive about the talk of Lief you mentioned in the end.For the first sentence "Theory is about knowing and seeing",I think he wanted to reveal the origin of theory or the preconditions to create theory.Theory should concern with perceiving the world and processing by our minds."Theory is about not doing" actually does not mean that we do not do anything in my view.I think he just want to make a comparision with the aspect of practical study in research. Thanks for sharing

Your discription of the relation between theory and practice is very interesing. At the start, you said the both should conflict with each other in the opposite mission respectively. One is doing, vice versa for another.Meantime, you argue that they influence and even rely on each other.Totally,I think the theory should be the preconditions to support the practice which try to probe more in a new context and even set up the new theoretical system. Thanks for sharing.

Hi,
Your discription of the discussion for categorizing the theory is very novel for me.I even never think about the topic. In my view,I might argue that there are not bad or good theories in deed, because the puzzle is how we could have a objective and common thoughts from the different individuals to judge it.It seems to go back the theme 1.I think the theory is better to divide with research areas.Thank for sharing.

Actually,I do not figure out the "empirical data" you mentioned at the start for the scientific theory. Is it collected from the critical research or acquired from our experiences?Meantime,I am also impressive for your discription of perceiving for theory. It seems to go back the theme 1.I always think we perceive the world with our bodies and minds, not only a orgen to just receive information.Like you said, probably,we see the external change first so that it inspire us to do more. But there is a processing to the data we get,at the same time, all the organs should work as the units. If we only have eys to see the world at the start, maybe we would get a totally different world. Thanks for sharing.

Hi,
I totally agree on your opinion about the data collection for creating the forms of the research. Generally,it migbe be necessary to have the quantitative analysis before we start the further step detailing framework .In some way,the accurate data could lead us to the shortcut for the results we expect all the time, especially, when we have many accesses to be chosen. On the other hand, the data would be nothing without the guidance of quanlitative method in some cases.I think that's why you say that quantitative data can’t explain the results when there is a complex question.

Hi,
I think your description of how qualititive and quantitative methods work together in a research work is quiet interesting.Because for many researches or tests we do not consider what kind of method we should definitely use before we formulate our works. The both should naturally complementary in our researches and affect direction and accuracy we expect so that the framework would be based on a stable system. We could easily find the access for supporting the measure or statistic we would use.Totally, the theme gives me more pratical reflections about my own works. Thanks for sharing.

Hi,
I have the same feeling with you for the central terms. In some way,I think it is more straightforward to use the quantitative and qualitative methods in our studies and researches.Acturally,in the seminar,we talked a lot about uses and choices of quantitative methods in different study area. And we mostly agree that the quantitative methods should be more pratical in the natural science. At least,we could collect data we expect. In other words,We connect the quantitative analysis with the data and its surroundings. But for the humanities,we are concern with the concepts. It is hard to shape the study and scale the results in an accurate way.I think it is not the whole of the concepts in the theme, however, the good way to make sense. Thanks for sharing.

It's really interesting to know how we are conscious to do something with quantitative methods in our life, even if they seem meaningless as you said. I think your idea of “refining the questions through qualitative methods” inspires me a lot on my own work in some degree.Actually,at the start of one project or test,I generally feel many limitations to enlarge our horizon and open our ideas, even can not pose a few questions. The more questions mean the more details we could handle in the beginning. From this perspective of view,I think it is optimal aspect from the lecture to my study. Thanks for sharing.

Hi,
Your thinking of "qualitative data could be analysed quantitatively" is very impressive to me.Yes,It often happens in the research.I think there are still many differences between the kind of analysis and real quantitative analysis. From one aspect, I think the qualitative methods interpret the casual relationship between the nature and phenomenon. On the other hand, there are more judgements of features of objects in quantitative methods. However, I think your case is really vivid to understand. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Nino,
You do the excellent job evey time.I get a a lot from your posts. I also agree that the quantitative methods should be based on the data, which concern with the measure, statistic, analysis and etc.And it seems more suitable to use in natural science.Meanwhile, the qualitative methods should be reveal a kind of casual relationship between the central concept and its surroundings or the phenomenon and priciple. I think they should be complementary in the implementation of research. Thanks for sharing.

Final reflection

I think this course gives me a lot of chances to practice my writting skills and
read some articles.Meantime,I don't think it could give a good knowledge to my programme or philosophy. But it inspires me and gives me more possible ways to construct the research.

To be honest,I've never kept an eye on the philosophy. In the beginning, for me and most of my chinese mates it is hard to understand and follow the ideas of the
articles  and professors. I don't know what the articles talk about even if I
finished the reading works. In the lecture,I could understand the main ides of theprofessors. But it is still hard to understand in the systemetic way. I just
grasped some pieces in the entire view.In total, this course is a little boring in
my opinion.
I don't think it really gives me something new. However,it should be necessary if I want to construct the academic research.

In the first lecture,we talked about perceiving the world. And we argued if the
"world" is objective or not. we assumed a infant in a specific living environment
who never accepted the edification with intelligence of humans. Then we discussed what kind of creature he would be. The preliminary conclusion is that he might be have the cognition with his own way to live as unique form with others. Because weall have our own “world” ,maybe it is incomprehensible to consider the world
from the outside of us.Kent argues that “perception without conception is blind”.

Professor said”our world is always our world”.The world might just exist in our

mind because of our limited cognition or access to perceive the world.
In the second theme,We argued with the nature of mass medias and popular cultures.
I thought many of them were just the product with short duration to cater to the
public. In the notion of "aura",It should be the "soul" of the art that cannot
never reproduced and just works to facilitate the "conversation" between the
objects and the individuals.
Then,we talked the Research and theory. In the research of humanities, people would
concentrate on the surroundings of the objects instead of answering or revealing
the truth with clear attitudes. For the science study, things would be more specific
and practical.Theory could assist us to probe the new theory in deeper
way, meantime,it is the crucial factor to prove or uncover the results we get.In
total, theory is the prerequisite to systematize the academic study. All the things
should start with perceiving the world.
In theme 4,our discussion inspires me with two related questions. The one is about the benefits and the limitations for qualitative methods and quantitative methods respectively.Another we talked in the end of the seminar is how we could make a proper choice and plan to utilize these methods in different cases.I think there is a contrast in the nature of the prototype design between the humanity and natural science research.Next week,we emphasize on the design research.I cared more about the two types of minds in my post. The one is consist of several mental images of some objects.or another type of idea,it will be abstract concepts that do not present as mental images.

Finally,We talked about the qualitative methods and case studies. I think the minds of the seminar are similar with the previous lectures sometimes.Because all the themes we talked are linked together.

Theme 6:reflection

I feel a little hard to understand the theme this week without a lecture. In this week,we discussed qualitative methods and case studies. Firstly, everything does not seem objective in the qualitative methods. Because the apporoach we used in the research usually is not objective, like the interviews.

It can not stand for the public opinions completely. Minds and researches come from the individuals. In this way,I agree that there should not have the completely objective mode.In the second part,we focused on the case studies. The case studies should be based on the contextual conditions and involved an up-close, in-depth, and detailed examination of the subjects. for me the best way to understand the term is that we put the object in the right place and test it with the proper methods. Finally,We talked about the qualitative methods and case studies. I think the minds of the seminar are similar with the previous lectures sometimes.Because all the themes we talked are linked together.

Theme 5:reflection

In this week,we emphasize on the design research, combining with media technologies. Before the first lecture, there are several questions related with the theme.Such as how can media technologies be evaluated? What role will prototypes play in research? However,we talked about what is idea, how to select idea for research design and how to construct idea.In philosophy, there are generally two forms of idea in our mind. The one is consist of several mental images of some objects. But there should have some preconditions before the idea occurs. If we cannot perceive the world and the external changes of the world, nothing would happen. From another point of view, the idea should be from our specific experiences which are acquired through other studies to some objects.Because of the deep research or description of these objects,We can easily build up the framework of related knowledge system of these ideas,at the same time,to connect other previous cognition. So these ideas mostly could be described in the great details. It could be seen as the extension of the prototype we already have.

For another type of idea,it will be abstract concepts that do not present as mental images.I think it should be based on certain perspectives of us to some objects or theories. In the academic research,it could be treated as the evaluation or criteria to the methodological or theoretical aspects. In a popular sense, an idea arises in a reflexive, spontaneous manner, even without thinking or serious reflection, for example, when we talk about the idea of a person or a place. A new or original idea can often lead to innovation.

In the second lecture,we discussed the importance of the prototype and knowledge contribution in the design work.In our knowledge system, prototype plays the role to gain the new knowledge easily. On the other hand,it should have the same contribution in the design research. And we talked about the proof of concept prototype,Which could be evaluated with several aspects- finding answers, solving problems and testing in practice. There are other discussions I got in the lecture.Gaining the new knowledge could be regarded as the principle to know the difference between interview and research.I think it really advises and reveals the methods to set the questionaires in our academic research.Go back to the concept prototype,in some way,the research might rely on some evaluations and criteria of the prototype we use. However, for the interview process,we generally emphasize and analyze the phenomenon of the results to get the data we expect ,which should be a part of the design research.

Theme 6: Qualitative and case study research(before lecture)

The paper I choose is Eckel, G., Pirrò, D., Sharma, G.K. (2009) "Motion- Enabled Live Electronics", ed. Fabien Gouyon, Álvaro Barbosa, and Xavier Serra, Proceedings of the 6th Sound and Music Computing Conference, Porto, Portugal, pp. 36-41
Which qualitative method or methods are used in the paper? Which are the benefits and limitations of using these methods?
In the paper, the author tied to start the research in the deeper perspective of studying the current forms and limitations of the music performance. So there are many cases and specific phenomena which are utilized as the ancillary references to support author’s view. For instance, the author argues that the performer’s body extends into the instrument that he is playing. He wanted to use the seeming unit or interaction as the base to explore a method called “MELE” for letting the body to affect the sound processing.Consequently,it can access the more creative and multivariate effects. As the author says ”sound processing and projection may rather be enacted than operated by the musicians, which is one of the goals of our approach. ”I think the phenomenon analysis gives a explicit shape to people understanding the differences between the traditional performance and the new way of music interpretation. At the same time, the technical problems are utilized to illustrate the actual puzzles or limitations for the performers and musicians.
What did you learn about qualitative methods from reading the paper?
In this paper, the researchers demonstrate a complete experiment which is actually a performance for the audience to prove the results that they expect. There is a preparation before the composers and performers come. They all have the conceptual framework or ideas that are probably from their past experiences.Initially, most performances are just in the term of exploring the new interfaces. But at the end of each test, most performers are totally accustomed this way and even request more complicated interfaces.I think the results of the methods prove the worth of the interfaces based on the MELE in some way.
Which are the main methodological problems of the study? How could the use of the qualitative method or methods have been improved?
It is worried of communication and technical supports between the composers and the performers at the beginning. They should work together on a piece.Actually, the performers deeply get involved in the electronic parts to compose their original ideas in the process.Hence, the composes and performers should be equally involved in the collaborative ways. Consequently, most performers play the more active role in the composition with expressing their ideas and decisions.Composers give the guide and support for the performers, considering the general idea and audience immersion on the presupposition of needs and limitations of performers. In the end, both of participants feel acceptable and very rewarding from each other.Meantime,it shows the possibilities of the novel interface to be used in the live performance.
Briefly explain to a first year university student what a case study is.
The case studies should be based on the contextual conditions and involved an up-close, in-depth, and detailed examination of the subjects. It always appear with popular works.Meantime,it could be conducted by following a formal research. The "case" being studied may be an individual, organization, event, or action, existing in a specific time and place. The data of case study should be collected from a sustained period of time. There are several types of case studies:  Key cases ,Outlier cases,Local knowledge cases.Decisions about the case selection need to be made about purpose, approach and process in the case study. A critical case allows the following type of generalization: "If it is valid for this case, it is valid for all (or many) cases."
Use the "Process of Building Theory from Case Study Research" (Eisenhardt, summarized in Table 1) to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of your selected paper.
From the perspective of case study,I think the author gets started with a definition of research questions. He emphasizes the “METE” which increases the degree of the performers’ embodiment in shaping the sound processing. The weaknesses in my way should be the Analyzing data.Because the data collected mostly is for supporting the new interfaces that the author always argues.I don’t think it could be used in a Cross-cases pattern.

Theme 4: Reflection

I think this week our topic is more practical and straightforward for our own studies.Initially,I red a paper that is from my study area and attempted to review it in the structured and methodical aspect.I tried to understand what theoretical and technical framework the research is based on and what the approaches are applied to demonstrate the main ideas and test process.Meantime,I just gave some possible ways to improve the value of the test or tinker the empty of the whole framework.I think the process is quiet hard. Because of the lack of past experiences of quantitative methods in my own projects.there is not a systematic and accurate scheme to follow author’s mind why he need do like that and experimental platform which is based on some specific principles.

In the seminar,Our discussion inspires me with two related questions. The one is about the benefits and the limitations for qualitative methods and quantitative methods respectively.

Another we talked in the end of the seminar is how we could make a proper choice and plan to utilize these methods in different cases. In some degree,I think the thoughts is based on the different situations. For the humanities research.Probably, it is quiet hard to collect the accurate data and details. At the beginning,I think there is a contrast in the nature of the prototype design between the humanity and natural science research.Generally, the prototype we assume is more abstract or theoretical stuff. So we might not need a clear answer to indicate the certain expectations from us.Certainly,it depends on characteristics of  the objects for the research.- whether the researchers or readers need a exact response.

For the natural science research.there are more prototypes we need claim at the beginning. For some reasons,it might be crucial way to facilitate the extensions of mind.Meantime,it is more feasible to collect the data from the objects and analyze the results with more accurate and systematic way.For the limitations,it’s obvious to figure it out according to the basic principle of them. The qualitative methods are probably more appropriate for the preliminary research or some preparations which is based on the superficial cognition.I think if we let the quantitative methods to lead the research design at the start. It might be influence and even change the emphases of our works in some way. However, the quantitative methods could enhance the authenticity and systematicity and reveal the problems in the practices which is more acceptable to inspect.Sometimes we need them all and emphasize one side at whiles.Anyway, they should be a system to benefit our projects.

Theme 5: Design research (before lecture)

How can media technologies be evaluated?

In total, the paper introduces the kind of streaming media application to combine the traditional media patterns with the interactive media technologies.I think there are many accesses to evaluate the media techniques. In this paper, the authors sets up several experiments in the authentic and systematic ways to conduct the charts and statistics.Through analyzing the results, author gives the objective and critical conclusions.Meanwhile, the research designs a complete and specific part to support the technical application as the crucial element to reveal the usability, efficiency, trainability.

What role will prototypes play in research?
I think the prototype of the research play a key role to make the objects or results we expect more concise and logical. It is like the root of the tree to control and provide the energy to our constant minds.Meantime,it’s generally simple enough so that it can facilitate the divergent thinking though using our experiences which are most familiar and usual surroundings of us.In this research, the author just uses the simple mind that makes the user experience of streaming media more interactive as the prototype to build up the questionaire for developing the possibilities.

Why could it be necessary to develop a proof of concept prototype?
From the logical aspect, when the author comes up with the concept prototype, usually,it should be assumed or ideal comparing with the practical methods.Hence,I think we need find several methods or specific conditions which design with certain principles to indicate the possibilities we assumed. As I said above, the research should be based on the original prototype. In some way, there is a decisive process to verify the authenticity for the system design.

What are characteristics and limitations of prototypes?
Prototypes is always concise and vivid for the research design to deal with some complexly technical issues. For the reader,It’s easy to make sense either.Meantime, there are more possibilities to connect another knowledge systems related because of its catholicity .It is effective way to grasp the main factors of the theoretical and technical framework. On the other hand, the design process of the prototype should be participated by certain numbers of individuals and dialectic under the objective scientific background. The individual’s experience usually have the potential illusions and even errors of common cognition.

How can design research be communicated/presented?
Initially, the structure of the research should be start at the superficial and common view as the leader to get itself involved in the deep and specific ways to probe. At the same time, some refine graphs and statistics are necessary for demonstrating the conceptions or prototypes. As a whole view, the charts could be a factor of constituting the complete and structured study as the quantitative methods.

What is the 'empirical data' in these two papers?
I think these two papers reveal some common situations and issues for the tangible interfaces and driving range respectively that mentioned in the text. It’ could be a starting point to launch the study in depth and give the feasible solutions.Meantime, because the research pattern is based on the exploration in some way, some ’empirical data’ also is used in the background brief and testing part.

- Can practical design work in itself be considered a 'knowledge contribution'?
I think it should be a kind of achievements from the practical design.Generally,we always set up several patterns to design the structure and explore the possible results in uncertain conditions. That probably is a new trial to conduct the research in different framework. We cannot simply see it as the acquired experiences. In this way.It causes the new technique or framework.

- Are there any differences in design intentions within a research project, compared to design in general?
In the research,we generally have some expectations or predictions with our previous knowledge before we design the structure. In other word,we already stand in the overall situation to plan our minds to indicate our thoughts of specific issues. So,we might pay more attention to the quantities we care and filter other properties so that the authenticity and systematicity of the research can be maintained though the process. However, the designing in general usually is more random and explorative as the current states or the object of short term.
- Is research in tech domains such as these ever replicable? How may we account for aspects such as time/historical setting, skills of the designers, available tools, etc?
These things are the parts of the whole process as the preconditions to influence the results.I think we could use a brief in the background instruction or a characterizing of experimental platforms to bring out these details. The certain tests or statistics always quote them or have a special requirements for the design process.

- Are there any important differences with design driven research compared to other research practices?
Maybe the differences appear in the aspect of real-time data and variability.Meantime, probably,we draw the driven research which is more focused the some components of the cars, not a complete object.

Theme 3: Relection

I started this theme with the definition of theory. It is a little abstract to understand in a clear way.Mostly,we use theories to support our ideas and build up the theoretical frameworks in the researches.However, we do not think more about the theory itself to clarify the puzzles that hinder us in someway.As the professor said,there is the difference to consider the question in the field of humanities and sciences.In the research of humanities,people try to discuss and argue about some objects,but they would concentrate on the surroundings of the objects instead of answering or revealing the truth with clear attitudes.For the science study,things would be more specific and practical.Theory could assist us to probe the new theory in deeper way,meantime,it is the crucial factor to prove or uncover the results we get.In total, theory is the prerequisite to systematize the academic study.All the things should start with perceiving the world.

In the lecture,the professor put a question - “what is the man?” And then, he collected multifarious responses from us.These answers demonstrate the man from different aspects with individual opinions,then they constitute the man who we are familiar with.It is just like the processing of conducting the experiment for topic research.Generally,we need a draft to explain our motivations ,methods to connect the data collection in the practical ways. We get the results to conclude something that we expected or not.And back to the start,we try to summarize or indicate what the problem should be.In the seminar, my partner doubts whether the data we collect is objective thing,which is one-hundred percent same with being itself in the nature.He argues that the data we use in the research is filtered more or less.In my opinion,theory might be framed in certain context.In other words,we already assume or draft some preconditions before we start.Especially,for the single attribute study in science,we do need eliminate other factors which might be impact the accuracy of statistics.

At the end of seminar,we discussed the humanities research,which is related regular methods.They argue and define the details around the central objects,even use new conceptions to build up the relationship between the elements,put different questions and give the different answer.To some extents,it might be an argument in a progressive way. I think our discussion about the theory and research is typical modal for the modern academic study.It inspires me in the structural and systematic aspects to clarify the process we need to follow.

Theme 4: Quantitative research (before lecture)

I chose the paper called “A Systematic Review of Mapping Strategies for the Sonification of Physical Quantities,http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0082491”,using the bottom-up pattern to set up a list of conceptual dimensions” included in physical and auditory areas. In total, the paper is an overview of the sonification performance to deliver and interpret the certain hints as a informational carrier. The approaches are the mapping-based.In the reviewed works, mappings were identifying and forming a database of 495 entries. In some way,I think it is the one of the features for the bottom-up structure that reveal and demonstrate the results with a great details in an data-based way.Meanwhile, because of the highly intensive data demonstrations, the most of entries would be obscure in the display. For the methods itself, there would be more risks to the increasing of difficulties to filter data and statistics.

The most impressive part of the paper in my mind is the author’s angle to the consider the subjects and the methods which are kinds of decomposition and categories in the whole view.Firstly, the author tries to build up the relations with even all physical quantities with the central terms. There is a database of 495 entries to support the methods to face up the multifarious objects and reflect different responses. Then, using the bottom-up pattern is easy to clarify the complex in an explicit and systematic way.

There are some puzzles for the methods formulation and implementation. This is the system based on the potential relations between central terms and its surroundings.Generally,we must filter and categorize the specific properties which is traced and referred finally in the statistics to make the structural plan more feasible and accurate.Hence, detecting the suitable and authentic data is in the crucial aspect to facilitate the quantitative methods in some degree.I think the cases collections and assumptions from the previous publications is play a key role as the precondition to influence the progressive methods. The methods in the paper is a good way to focus on main factors and contradictions of the central objects that related with multifarious factors and neglect the contrast of quantities temporarily.

Which are the benefits and limitations of using quantitative methods?
Which are the benefits and limitations of using qualitative methods?

In this paper, the researchers conduct the critical and accurate methods with the quantitative methods, such as the samples detection, materials uses, data analysis and etc.I think the quantitative methods could demonstrate and control the process of experiments in the authentic framework which is under the system of engineering management. It contributes to the results with more deep and extensive to set up the mathematical model so that we could conclude the exact value and other features of aimed objects. To say simply, the quantity could translate the phenomenon in the range of human’s cognition. However, the highly accurate statistics with large workloads of data analysis and collection.Probably, the qualitative methods which focus on the phenomenon and relations between objects with previous knowledge and empirical judgments is feasible to analyze  and summarize the predictions of objects with current state in a preliminary research. However, the quantitative methods should be the preconditions of qualitative analysis in some way.Only the constant interpretation of patterns and properties could be detected to brace the quantity structures and improve the accuracy of data filtering, the results can be comprehensive and meaningful. Definitely, the both should be work together for the critical and complete methods
